Meat & Bread Boats

I was surfing the web looking at recipes and got this cool idea.  You  could use pretty much any ground meat for the filling.  Combine with some chopped vegetables and spices and you've got a tasty dinner.

Ingredients

  • Bread
    • 3 1/2 cups flour
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 2 1/4 tsp yeast
    • 1 tsp sugar
    • 150 ml hot water
    • 100 ml heavy cream
    • 1 tbsp oil
    • 3 egg whites
  • Meat Filling
    • 1 lb beef
    • 1 large tomato
    • 1/2 large onion
    • 1/2 lb feta
    • 6 oz can tomato paste
    • Spice to taste:
    • Cumin
    • Chili powder
    • parsley
    • cayenne
  • Glaze
    • 3 egg yolks
    • 2 1/2 tbsp oil

Directions

  1. For the bread, combine 1 cup flour with the salt, yeast, and sugar.  Add in the water, cream, oil, and egg whites.  Mix well.
  2. Add remaining flour.  Knead on floured surface.  Let rise in warm place until doubled (about 60 minutes).
  3. Combine all ingredients for meat filling.  Set aside.
  4. Split dough into 7-8 equal pieces.  Roll each piece on floured surface to make a large oval.  Fill with 3-4 heaping tablespoonfuls of filling, keeping about one inch away from edges.
  5. Fold sides and then ends.  Pinch together to seal (see pictures).  Place each boat on a greased baking sheet (or stone) that has been sprinkled with corn meal.
  6. Combine egg yolks and oil.  Brush over sides of each bread boat.
  7. Bake at 350ºF for 20-25 minutes.
