Aloha Hot Dog

Yield: 8 servings

We first ran across this hot dog at a Saucy Dogs, a restaurant in Hilo, Hawaii.  Great restaurant; strongly recommend you visit.

They were so good that we decided to make them ourselves.  It's not quite as good as the original, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than a flight to Hawaii for the real deal.

Ingredients

  • Teriyaki Mayo Sauce
    • 1/4 cup mayonnaise (NOT Miracle Whip)
    • 3 tbsp teriyaki sauce
    • 1 1/2 tsp lime juice
    • Salt, to taste
  • 4 rings of fresh pineapple, approximately 1/4" thick
  • 8 hot dogs
  • 8 buns
  • 8 slices bacon, cooked
  • 2 jalapenos, sliced
  • Red onion, chopped
  • Fresh cilantro

Directions

  1. To make the sauce, combine all ingredients.  Mix thoroughly.
  2. Place the freshly sliced pineapple onto the grill and cook, approximately 5-8 minutes per side.  Remove from the grill and cut into thin slices.
  3. Grill the hot dogs as normal.  Toast the buns for 1-2 minutes when the hot dogs are finishing.
  4. To assemble your Aloha dog:
    1. Place a hot dog in a bun.
    2. Place a strip of bacon down the side of the bun.
    3. Place slices of jalapenos on the side of the bun.
    4. Place slices of pineapple along the hot dog.
    5. Sprinkle with red onion & fresh cilantro.
    6. Drizzle with teriyako mayo sauce.
  5. Enjoy!
